I spoke with Kevin Jodrey, cultivation director at the Humboldt Patient Resource Center in Arcata, at the High Times Medical Cannabis Cup in San Francisco. The three clips below, less than a minute each, discuss public perceptions about medical marijuana, the potential impact of legalization, and how the Humboldt County collective was more interested in networking than in drumming up new business. The poor sound quality and concrete wall backdrop are offset in part by some great visuals of folks enjoying the Prop. 215 patio reserved for medical marijuana patients. Kevin makes some interesting points, [...]

Local governments could cash in on legal pot to the tune of $7.5 million, a new Santa Cruz County grand jury report concludes. The analysis of the financial impact of Proposition 19, a measure on the Nov. 2 statewide ballot, which seeks to legalize, regulate and tax marijuana, is one of several reports released Tuesday by the grand jury — and no doubt the most unusual, the Santa Cruz Sentinel reports. As is typical, the grand jury spent the past year studying various government agencies, and in its final report raises issues and makes recommendations [...]

The California NAACP has endorsed a November ballot measure to legalize adult recreational use of marijuana, calling the measure a civil rights issue because blacks have a disproportionate number of arrests for marijuana possession compared with whites. Accompanied by other African American leaders in California, the president of the state NAACP, Alice Huffman, said the current prohibition on marijuana has led to the criminalizing of young people and consequently has hampered the ability of many African Americans to prosper. The organization is the most mainstream statewide entity to endorse the marijuana measure, Proposition 19, to [...]

It’s apparent to anyone with eyes to see and ears to listen that the members of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors have no intention of obeying the law if they disagree with it. It’s an odd position for folks charged with enforcing the law to take, North County Times staff writer Jim Trageser writes in an opinion column. And yet we the voters have only ourselves to blame, as we continue to re-elect Bill Horn, Dianne Jacob, Ron Roberts and Pam Slater-Price to office every four years, despite their proven track record of [...]

The High Times Medical Cannabis Cup seemed like a great place to talk about medical marijuana, and as luck would have it I spied Chef Mike DeLao of Cannabis Planet TV fame. Chef Mike had me cracking up on a recent episode where he slathered a generous helping of cannabis-infused dressing over a salad. “Everybody loves more medicine,” he said with a sly grin. At least I think that’s what he said, and I think it was salad, but I was “medicated” at the time so I couldn’t swear to it. Having recently renewed my [...]

West Coast Cannabis publisher to appear at comedy benefit

Sacramento resident Ngaio Bealum says he loves to cut up on stage about “weed and sex.” But this stand-up comic-activist-journalist-entrepreneur says he also aims to change “the stoner paradigm.” “It’s not about sitting around and doing nothing,” says the editor and publisher of West Coast Cannabis, a monthly pot lifestyles publication that bills itself as the Sunset magazine of weed. “My thing is I like to smoke a joint and go do something.” And so Bealum, 42, a San Francisco native born in 1968 to Black Panther Party members, plays a multifaceted role in the [...]

Upland dispensaries face shutdown effort by city

UPLAND — Aaron Sandusky hopes to change the city’s views on medical marijuana. Sandusky is president of G3 Holistic — one of two medical marijuana cooperatives in Upland that the city is trying to close. “We try to lead by example and I think it shows all the way through and hopefully (the city) will see that and give us a chance to continue,” said Sandusky, who opened G3 Holistic in November and has members in San Bernardino County. City officials are attempting to shut down G3 Holistic in the 1700 block of West Foothill [...]

Bud’s note: Talk about focus. Tehama Herbal Collective in Corning has been collecting daily citations in its legal fight to continue operations, yet it managed a third-place finish in the indica category at the recent High Times Medical Cannabis Cup. Now the city plans to extend its moratorium against a dispensary that’s obviously doing something right. ================== It has been more than 11 months since the Corning City Council approved an emergency interim ordinance banning medical marijuana dispensaries, collectives or cooperatives. That ban could be extended for one more year. The ordinance was created as [...]

While making some very sweeping and, for the most part, completely unsubstantiated statements about the drug war, Tuesday’s column by former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson (“Legalize pot to cut crime, fill coffers”) completely ignores the actual issue California voters will be facing this November. This marijuana initiative is like many others, financed by people who financially benefit if it passes. Yet it differs in that it’s one of the most poorly drafted measures to ever reach the ballot. With each passing week, yet another presumably unintended consequence of the legal gobbledygook the proponents filed [...]

A state appellate court has reinstated the Sonoma County ordinance regulating medical marijuana dispensaries, a measure that had been struck down by a lower court ruling last year. Siding with the county, California’s First Appellate District Court, based in San Francisco, temporarily put aside a December 2009 ruling by Sonoma County Superior Court Judge Robert Boyd that deemed the 2007 ordinance illegal. The appellate court issued a brief ruling Thursday that reinstates the ordinance until a final ruling, which could be months away. The decision throws into legal limbo at least a half-dozen medical marijuana [...]
