In light of a recent federal crackdown on medical marijuana, seven San Francisco supervisors urged the feds to reverse course. “I believe it’s important for us … to be very clear that we support the right of patients to have access to medicine,” said Supervisor David Campos, chief sponsor of the nonbinding resolution. His co-sponsors are Supervisors Eric Mar, John Avalos, David Chiu, Ross Mirkarimi, Jane Kim and Scott Wiener. It’s not the first time the supervisors have weighed in, Rachel Gordon reports in the San Francisco Chronicle. In 2001, the Board of Supervisors declared [...]
Isleton’s plans for a massive medical marijuana farm have been scuttled by threats from prosecutors, but officials from the small Delta city insist they acted properly when they approved the project last year. In a 52-page response to a Sacramento County grand jury investigation, Isleton officials say the panel’s report on the project was filled with errors, ignored important facts and cost the cash-strapped town $100,000 to defend itself. “Despite hearing testimony from twenty witnesses, the grand jury’s eleven page report contains more than fifteen material errors of fact,” the report from Isleton City Attorney [...]
A resolution authored by U.S. Rep. Wally Herger urging federal agencies to put more effort into ousting pot growers from public lands passed the House overwhelmingly Wednesday. The Chico Republican’s House Resolution 1540 directs Congress to develop a plan to permanently dismantle the Mexican drug traffickers’ pot growing operations on federal lands. Co-sponsored by six House Republicans from California, Texas and Utah, the bill passed on a 400-4 vote, Ryan Sabalow reports in the Redding Record Searchlight. “This resolution is an important step and puts federal agencies on notice that this issue is a priority [...]
About 50 people interested in learning what it will take to open a commercial medical marijuana facility in Eureka went to City Hall on Thursday to get their questions answered. Community Development Director Sidnie Olson, Councilman Jeff Leonard and Medical Cannabis Selection Sub-Committee member Paul Hagen hosted the workshop. Their goal was to set up potential business owners for success in applying for a conditional use permit to open a medical marijuana dispensary or production facility within the city, Allison White reports in the Eureka Times-Standard. The Eureka City Council passed a medical marijuana ordinance [...]
I’ve already voted for Prop. 19, thanks to mail-in balloting, so I could tune out the rest of the campaign. Except I’m pissed off, and you should be too. Selfish stoners are talking out their collective asses with such passion it almost makes one forget the dazzling incoherency of what they’re saying. Selfish stoners say they support legalization but oppose Proposition 19. Then they rattle off a list of complaints that are inherent with any legalization plan, an impressive laundry list of fears that includes corporate cannabis, regulations, taxation and plant monoculture. Rather than face [...]
The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors decided Tuesday to support Proposition 19, despite some members’ hesitation over the measure to legalize marijuana. Although 3rd District Supervisor Mark Lovelace had originally recommended the board take a “no position,” 4th District Supervisor Bonnie Neely said she supported Proposition 19 and she thinks the board should as well because of marijuana’s ties to Humboldt’s economy and public safety. Neely said while it’s true that Proposition 19 does not have all its regulations ironed out, not many propositions do. She said it would be an opportunity for officials to [...]
Proposition 19 would partially legalize marijuana in California if passed, but many local mayors are against allowing it to be sold in their boundaries, the San Bernardino Sun reports. Rancho Cucamonga Mayor Don Kurth said that because the proposition would be in violation of federal law against marijuana, the proposition was flawed and he needed clarification. “I support whatever it is people want,” Kurth said. “However, that conflict has got to be resolved. My guess is most of the other people in public office would have a similar viewpoint. We don’t want to see our [...]
Bakersfield City Councilman and county supervisor candidate Zack Scrivner was arrested for felony possession of a significant amount of marijuana 13 years ago while attending the University of California at Santa Barbara, he admitted Friday on the Jaz McKay Show on KNZR 1560 radio. “When I was in college in Santa Barbara, there was a lot of partying going on,” and he and several friends were arrested at their home after a police officer witnessed one friend smoking pot through an open blind, Scrivner said. “We were all doing some things we shouldn’t have been [...]
LONG BEACH — If California voters approve Proposition 19 on Nov. 2 to legalize recreational marijuana, Long Beach officials want to be ready to capitalize on it. Long Beach’s Measure B would create a new category of “marijuana business” and would tax the drug. The measure would impose a tax of $150 per $1,000 of gross receipts for marijuana sales, and a tax of $25 per square foot on all improvements to a site used by a marijuana business to cultivate or grow marijuana. Marijuana businesses that qualify as nonprofits under state law would pay [...]
Bud’s note: Today’s must-read is this delightfully candid San Jose Mercury News editorial endorsing Jerry Brown for governor. The writer doesn’t pull punches, and neither does Jerry. Despite his No-on-19 stance, a political necessity this election cycle, Brown as attorney general developed new Prop. 215 guidelines for law enforcement. He’s earned the cannabis vote. ================== Jerry Brown offers California exactly what it needs in its next governor: a mature politician who can get things done in Sacramento and who brings good ideas, strong principles and a reputation for telling the truth. It’s popular in some [...]
