On the heels of a federal crackdown, Del Norte County is considering ways of regulating or possibly banning medical marijuana dispensaries. County supervisors David Finigan and Mike Sullivan have directed county counsel Gretchen Stuhr to research the issue, Adam Spencer reports in the Del Norte Triplicate. Stuhr said this week she has spoken with other county counsels in the state. “The consensus that I’m hearing is that they haven’t found a single (dispensary that is) within the state law,” Stuhr said. Some government officials, including Stuhr, believe that simply exchanging money for medical marijuana is [...]

Some 5,320 marijuana plants were found by the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit as they served a search warrant at two properties Tuesday. Seven people were arrested, and one of them indicated the operation had ties to a Sacramento-area marijuana collective, said sheriff’s Cmdr. Bill Steven. During an 11 a.m. search of property at 197 Ames Way south of Crescent City, authorities found about 5,000 marijuana plants and more than 50 pounds of dried marijuana in a large metal building, Steven told the Crescent City Daily Triplicate. A search of the residence at [...]
A Gasquet man will have the chance to receive the cash value of his marijuana plants that were destroyed by authorities after a search warrant was served three years ago on a Crescent City home he owned. According to his attorney, Jon Alexander, that value is “several hundred thousand dollars,” reports the Crescent City Daily Triplicate. Judge Philip Schafer ruled Friday that a 2009 civil suit against Del Norte County asking for the cash value of the marijuana plants that were destroyed can proceed, with the value of the marijuana plants converted to cash value. [...]
Daniel Sosa didn’t know what to expect when he flew into Crescent City on Friday to pick up 4 pounds of marijuana. Sosa had a 2 p.m. appointment with the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office to get back marijuana that was confiscated in February 2009 during a routine traffic stop. His appointment, and the subsequent handoff, was a first for both Sosa and the Sheriff’s Office, reports Kurt Madar of the Daily Triplicate in Crescent City. “This is the first time we’ve released that quantity of marijuana,” said sheriff’s Commander Tim Athey. “It’s not something [...]
From the Daily Triplicate in Crescent City comes this well-sourced and detailed article by Adam Madison about medical marijuana in Del Norte County. Among the article’s more surprising revelations: County supervisors in 2008 ditched a policy allowing medipot users to grow up to 99 plants in a 100-square-foot area. Since then, it’s been up to local law enforcement to determine how much marijuana is “reasonable” to meet a patient’s needs. ================== Confusion surrounds the use of medical marijuana in states like California that have decriminalized its use, and Del Norte County is no exception. State [...]
