In response to a court order, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department Friday afternoon returned 2 pounds of medicinal marijuana to a dispensary from which it was seized earlier this month. A Sacramento Superior Court judge Friday morning ordered the Sheriff’s Department to return the marijuana to the Common Roots Collective, Kim Minugh reports in the Sacramento Bee. On Dec. 1, deputies accompanied code enforcement officers who executed an inspection warrant at the dispensary on 52nd Street in Sacramento, said John Fuery, the collective’s attorney. While at the collective, deputies seized 2 pounds of marijuana, citing [...]
Alice Long, a “patient member” of the Magnolia Wellness Center, came to the medical marijuana store one last time Friday to pick up a gram of “Lemon Wreck” for her headaches and a dark chocolate cannabis bar to help her relax. Boasting what was perhaps Sacramento County’s largest registry of medical marijuana users, the Orangevale dispensary was closing with a flourish, Peter Hecht reports in the Sacramento Bee. Throughout the day, it offered specials that included free grams of marijuana and discounts on “top shelf” cannabis strains. The only-in-California business closing had customers lined up [...]
Sacramento County supervisors said they wanted to make it unambiguous that they won’t permit medical marijuana dispensaries. So board members passed a county zoning amendment that fails to include the words “medical” or “marijuana” or “dispensaries,” Peter Hecht reports in the Sacramento Bee. Instead, supervisors are seeking to bring an end to the county’s once teeming medical marijuana trade by denying business permits to establishments that conflict with “either state or federal law, or both” under a new policy approved Tuesday. The board’s action comes after aggressive code enforcement efforts – and threats of federal [...]
A nearly 2-year-old Orangevale medical marijuana dispensary said Monday that it has become the first in the Sacramento area to unionize. The 20 employees at Magnolia Wellness at 9198 Greenback Lane are now active members of UFCW 8, also known as the Golden State United Food and Commercial Workers Union. “We are extremely happy to have Magnolia Wellness on board,” said Darin Ferguson, district union representative of UFCW 8. “We believe they are a legitimate business providing an important service in their community.” UFCW claims more than 30,000 members throughout the western United States, Mark [...]
Elk Grove medical marijuana growers could find their agricultural activities facing heavy oversight in the months ahead, thanks to a City Council plan to impose stringent regulations on cultivation sites. “It’s a shame that it has to come to this sort of thing,” Councilman Pat Hume said in an interview Thursday. “But there’s too much abuse and wanton disregard for (neighbors at cultivation sites).” The City Council last week set in motion staff work on a draft ordinance that could force pot growers to keep their cultivation out of sight – either in a separate, [...]
Sacramento District Attorney Jan Scully will not file charges in Isleton’s aborted plans for a large medical marijuana farm, but she made it clear that she believes the whole matter was bungled from the start. “Had the marijuana cultivation farm project become operational it would have been illegal under state and federal laws and not in compliance with attorney general guidelines,” Scully’s office wrote in a scathing 21-page report released Thursday. The report is the latest swipe at the Delta town’s failed efforts to generate revenues by approving a 15,000-square-foot farm on the northern edge [...]
Why is Sacramento County, instead of raking in millions via taxes and fees, spending millions to shut down its medical-cannabis dispensaries? That’s what attorney George Mull is wondering on the heels of last Wednesday’s board of supervisors meeting, when staff recommended spending $1.1 million over the next nine months to ratchet up enforcement against its pot clubs. “I think it’s the biggest waste of resources I’ve seen in the county in a long time,” he said, arguing that it will be “more expensive for them than they can possibly imagine.” Sacramento County says pot clubs [...]
Isleton’s plans for a massive medical marijuana farm have been scuttled by threats from prosecutors, but officials from the small Delta city insist they acted properly when they approved the project last year. In a 52-page response to a Sacramento County grand jury investigation, Isleton officials say the panel’s report on the project was filled with errors, ignored important facts and cost the cash-strapped town $100,000 to defend itself. “Despite hearing testimony from twenty witnesses, the grand jury’s eleven page report contains more than fifteen material errors of fact,” the report from Isleton City Attorney [...]
A judge Monday rejected an effort by attorneys for the city of Isleton to stop prosecutors from questioning officials in the tiny Delta town about their arrangement with a private pot-cultivation outfit. The District Attorney’s Office this month subpoenaed current and former Isleton City Council members and other officials to answer questions in front of the Sacramento County grand jury about the city’s medicinal marijuana deal with Delta Allied Growers. Even after Sacramento District Attorney Jan Scully made it clear she was investigating the planned medical marijuana farm in Isleton last February, operators of the project quietly brought in more than 1,000 marijuana plants and began growing them inside the garages of three vacant homes on the property, a new grand jury report states. But when federal authorities warned the city and project planners that they could face prosecution, a worker from Delta Allied Growers supposedly used a backhoe to bury the plants 10 to 15 feet underground on the site and all work stopped.
