A year after closing its doors, Mother Earth’s Alternative Healing Cooperative is scheduled to reopen as the first legally permitted medical marijuana collective in unincorporated San Diego County. Founder Bob Riedel has spent months transforming a 15,200-square-foot former cabinet shop outside the city of El Cajon into a co-op replete with space for dispensing, cultivating and meetings for East County Americans for Safe Access, part of the national advocacy organization. Riedel shuttered his former location in Fallbrook because it would not have qualified for an operating permit, Christopher Cadelago reports in the San Diego Union-Tribune. [...]

IMPERIAL BEACH — City officials are holding a public hearing tonight to consider banning medical marijuana distribution facilities within the city. Imperial Beach has a temporary moratorium on dispensaries set to expire this summer, Wendy Fry reports in the San Diego Union-Tribune. With only about two square miles of inhabited space, the city has struggled with zoning regulations to comply with a state law that requires dispensaries to be at least 600 feet from schools while at the same time maintaining patients’ rights to medical marijuana access. It was the second time [...]

It’s apparent to anyone with eyes to see and ears to listen that the members of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors have no intention of obeying the law if they disagree with it. It’s an odd position for folks charged with enforcing the law to take, North County Times staff writer Jim Trageser writes in an opinion column. And yet we the voters have only ourselves to blame, as we continue to re-elect Bill Horn, Dianne Jacob, Ron Roberts and Pam Slater-Price to office every four years, despite their proven track record of [...]

A San Diego County man facing federal drug charges for running a medical marijuana storefront has asked a judge to let him argue to the jury that, essentially, President Barack Obama and his administration said it was OK to do so. U.S. District Judge Barry Ted Moskowitz, the federal judge overseeing the proceedings against the man, James Stacy, will hear from attorneys June 9 before he decides whether it would be OK for the jury to hear the Obama-said-I-could argument. Stacy’s attorney, Kasha Castillo, said the ruling will be “the biggest decision of this case,” [...]
