REDWOOD CITY — The latest applicant hoping to set up a medical-marijuana club in San Mateo County met the same end Monday as the 10 previous ones. The San Mateo County License Board denied Rob Bueno’s application to open a dispensary at 2853 El Camino Real in Redwood City. He can ask for a second hearing before the board but, after the unanimous “no” vote, the San Mateo resident said he was ambivalent. “I’m not 100 percent sure if I’ll appeal,” he said. The license board has only approved one application in the past two [...]

Mary Ann Nihart has had some surprises since becoming mayor of Pacifica. Stumbling into a pot dispensary was, by far, the weirdest. Not that it took her long to work out what kind of business she, the chief of police, and a county supervisor had randomly discovered while touring some local businesses in the city’s Palmetto neighborhood last month. “Let’s just say it’s a distinctive odor that if you ever went to college, you won’t forget,” Nihart told Julia Scott of the San Mateo County Times. “The look on everybody’s face was pretty priceless.” Ever [...]

San Mateo resident Rob Bueno knows it won’t be easy to convince San Mateo County to let him open a medical marijuana dispensary in an unincorporated pocket of Redwood City. He is well aware that the county has not allowed any medical pot clubs since the Board of Supervisors adopted an ordinance in 2009 allowing them in unincorporated areas, Bonnie Eslinger reports in the Palo Alto Daily News. “I’m sure there will be people protesting it,” Bueno said. “But if the county didn’t really want to have these, why do they even have a law?” [...]

The South San Francisco City Council has held off lifting a moratorium on the establishment of medical marijuana dispensaries to study the matter further but indicated it might, in time, allow more than one such operation in town. On Wednesday, the council reviewed a proposed ordinance governing medical marijuana dispensaries that would be more stringent than the one originally adopted in 2006. The current proposal would allow for just one dispensary in the city, among other conditions, Neil Gonzales reports in the San Mateo County Times. But concerned about being fair to those seeking to [...]

REDWOOD CITY — Citing a lack of support from local government and police, the operator of what would have been the Peninsula’s first officially approved medical marijuana dispensary dropped Tuesday his request to open up in North Fair Oaks. The surprise announcement came moments after the start of an appeal hearing before the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors that could have ended with the overturning of the approval Bradley Ehikian, 28, won in October for the Sans Souci Medical Collective. “We withdraw this application with a heavy heart knowing of the long hours put [...]

A cop pulls over a motorist who’s driving like he’s drunk, but the officer suspects the driver may be high on marijuana. Unlike with alcohol, there’s no objective way for police to detect whether somebody is impaired while driving under the influence of marijuana. There’s no breath test for THC, pot’s active ingredient, and no 0.08 limit to drive like California law sets for alcohol in the blood. Now, as Californians consider making the state the first in the country to legalize the recreational use of marijuana, police officials are concerned that Proposition 19 could [...]

A phone rings in an office with no sign in a San Jose industrial park, and a caller places an order for delivery. But it’s not your ordinary delivery service — the caller wants pot, not pizza. A driver for the Green Access collective then loads packages of marijuana bearing names of strains like Bubble Berry and Grapefruit and heads out, often to San Mateo County, to make a delivery in what is an increasingly common way for medical marijuana to change hands. But whether it’s legal or safe depends on whom you ask. One [...]
