RED BLUFF — About to enter its third year, the marijuana case against two Red Bluff men was prolonged once more Tuesday, this time pending the decision of a state appellate court. The two are charged with cultivation of marijuana and possession of marijuana for sale in connection with an Oct. 21, 2009, raid on a Baker Road warehouse. Froome also faces eight counts of money laundering, Janet O’Neill reports in the [...]
RED BLUFF — The trial of two Red Bluff men arrested nearly two years ago in connection with a large marijuana-growing operation has been postponed again. The jury trial for businessman Joe Froome and his son-in-law, Daniel Ludwig, was moved to Oct. 4 during a hearing Tuesday in Tehama County Superior Court, Janet O’Neill reports in the Record Searchlight. Both Judge S. William Abel, the retired Colusa County Superior Court judge assigned to the case, and William Panzer, Froome’s Oakland attorney, declared scheduling conflicts that delayed the Sept. 20 start date. Froome and Ludwig are [...]

RED BLUFF — A judge Tuesday deferred a ruling on special jury instructions until the upcoming marijuana trial of Red Bluff businessman Joe Froome and his son-in-law, Daniel Ludwig. Judge S. William Abel, retired from Colusa County Superior Court, told attorneys he was reluctant before hearing the evidence to grant the defense motion asking to instruct jurors on medical cannabis law. “I just think I’m kind of in a Never-Neverland before I hear the facts,” he said. Both Froome, 48, and Ludwig, 27, are charged with cultivation of marijuana and possession of marijuana for sale. [...]
RED BLUFF — Those looking to get medical marijuana from a dispensary in Tehama County will have to look elsewhere. Some 18 months after it held its first study session on the issue, the Board of Supervisors voted unanimously this week to ban the shops in the unincorporated area of the county, Janet O’Neill reports in the Record Searchlight. The ordinance goes into effect 30 days from Tuesday’s adoption, Assistant County Counsel Arthur Wylene said, replacing a temporary prohibition due to expire. It didn’t take long for the Corning Planning Commission to recommend an ordinance to the City Council that would ban medical marijuana dispensaries. The commission came to the unanimous decision during Tuesday’s public hearing (May 16) following only a few minutes of discussion, Julie R. Johnson reports in the Corning Observer. Planning Director John Stoufer told the commission the city had until July 6 to have an ordinance in place if it planned on doing so before its interim ordinance banning dispensaries sunsets on Aug. 6. “Once an ordinance is adopted by the City Council [...]
RED BLUFF — Trying to avoid a deadlock while seeking more time to get questions answered, the Tehama County Planning Commission on Thursday delayed a vote on regulating medical marijuana dispensaries until June 9. The Board of Supervisors aims to get a permanent ordinance either banning dispensaries or regulating them in place before September, when a nonrenewable moratorium expires. Any vote on the two drafts by the commission is advisory, Janet O’Neill reports in the Redding Record Searchlight. “I would be leaning toward the ban ordinance,” panel member Lynn DeFreece said toward the end of [...]
RED BLUFF — Two draft laws, one that would ban medical marijuana dispensaries and another that would strictly regulate them, are on their way to the Tehama County Planning Commission. If the regulatory version ultimately passes in its current form, the county would be breaking new ground by requiring that a licensed medical professional dispense the cannabis, Janet O’Neill reports in the Redding Record Searchlight. “We definitely would be the first as far as I can tell,” Assistant County Counsel Arthur Wylene said. “That doesn’t make it right or wrong. We just would be on [...]
RED BLUFF — A judge reluctantly agreed Tuesday to a six-month delay for the marijuana trial of Red Bluff businessman Joe Froome and his son-in-law, Daniel Ludwig. In addition, Superior Court Judge C. Todd Bottke denied a defense motion that sought to throw the case out based on another judge’s ruling in the preliminary hearing. By the time the trial, which had been scheduled to start next week, begins Sept. 20, it will have been nearly two years since the men were arrested. Froome, 48, and Ludwig, 27, have been charged with cultivating marijuana and [...]
