Like so many others in California, we’ve heard — and listened to — all the arguments for legalizing marijuana. We even agree that some have merit, the Vallejo Times-Herald opines in this No-on-19 editorial. Proposition 19, however, is another matter. The controversial Nov. 2 measure, which would legalize limited personal cultivation and use of marijuana and allow local governments to authorize and regulate commercial enterprises, is a certified mess. We therefore urge voters to reject it. Here’s why. For starters, there’s Proposition 19′s distorted and contradictory message to children about drug use and gateway drugs. [...]

In the 1940s and ’50s, Stan Eby was part of a strong-man balancing act, traveling the country and becoming a regular in the early days of Santa Monica’s famous “Muscle Beach.” Some 60 years later, Eby runs a marijuana dispensary — Stan the Man Collective — on the outskirts of Vallejo. When Eby talks about why he bears police raids and legal hurdles instead of dropping his efforts, he spends little time explaining. “Because [...]
The Stan the Man Collective’s operations should be up to the Vallejo Planning Commission and City Council — not the courts, the medical marijuana dispensary’s attorney has argued in a recent court filing. City Deputy Attorney Alan Cohen argued this month that the dispensary is violating city zoning codes and is working under a falsified [...]

(See Bud’s armchair legal analysis below.) Resident Chris Valentine, on behalf of the Vallejo Giving Tree Patients Cooperative, is suing the city. He says he was barred from his venture, despite city zoning codes not specifically banning cooperatives within city limits. Vallejo zoning codes specify what types of retail businesses are allowed, and marijuana dispensaries are not covered, said deputy city attorney Alan Cohen. Valentine initially sought [...]
